Stream Monitoring Program

The Shiawassee Stream Team is an extension of the MICorps program

 and assists local and state governments, research institutions, and other community organizations gain a better sense of river health in order to quickly recognize and address pollution problems.

The Friends of the Shiawassee River is one of many organizations throughout the watershed that has joined a collaborative effort to form the Shiawassee River Watershed Coalition that resulted in the designation of 88 miles of a National Water Trail.

Annual Shiawassee
River Cleanup

For 30 years, the Friends and our supporters have worked to improve the health of the Shiawassee River. Volunteers can assist with cleanups in the river and parks, or paddle stretches of the water by canoe to remove tires and other debris.



Obsolete Dam Removal


The Friends of the Shiawassee River work to promote a healthy river for everyone to enjoy. Guided by scientific research, the experiences of other communities, and specific local studies, we are convinced that the Shiawassee River will be healthier without dams.
